The precepts for entrepreneurship success are planning, structure, monitoring, measuring and the implementation of the necessary corrective action. Entrepreneurs and corporate leaders need to be people of decisive action and implementation rather than strategic thinkers whose ideas are never put into the five tenants of success that is planning, structuring, and monitoring, measuring and corrective action.
The model of entrepreneurship in Zimbabwe has failed mostly in small to medium scale enterprises because of the haphazard approach to implementation of brilliant business concepts. Little time is put into business planning and structuring, monitoring, measuring of business internal processes, service excellence and review of business performance.
We have seen the advent of the land reform programme and the indigenization paradigm propels our business community to the entrepreneurship mind-set. Fifteen years ago, we as Zimbabweans where primarily motivated to work in the corporate world and earn a decent salary. The goal was to drive a company car, get educational benefits and allowances that would make one live from pay cheque to pay cheque. However, times have changed the black ordinary Zimbabwean has been educated through the experience of the “lost decade” and the hyper inflationary economy titled the “casino economy” by some experts that businesses is a model that can be pursued victoriously.
However, the gap that exists within our economy for entrepreneurship success needs to be maximized by business people and stewards whose primary vision focuses on effective planning and business structuring.
Planning for a business project’s long term future begins from a strategic planning process which gives it the indispensable value of a unique selling proposition, competitive advantage and effective stakeholder value. In addition the entity’s growth direction is easily mapped out with the critical organization components providing the synergy for victory. Operational effectiveness is premised on effective long and short term planning, thus the turnaround strategy for this agro based economy is in the effective correctional education of entrepreneurs to be effective planners.
A holistic approach to planning is vital for organization effective tactical strategy. Structuring of an organization’s fundamental resources that include its people, processes and possessions leads a business into victorious business direction. Documentation of business internal processes epitomizes applicable and professional business standards. Service Excellence as a culture is easily traceable to effective planning and business structuring.
The systematic approach to entrepreneurship directs business capitalists to the advent of monitoring and evaluation of entity’s feasibility and productivity. The presiding documentation of internal processes guarantees a step by step analysis of the business internal processes audit, which yields the positive result of business excellence, competitive advantage and unique selling proposition maintenance.
Business performance measurement is an all envisaging process that focuses on measuring entity market share, profitability, return on investment, business growth, employee motivation, organizational leadership and organizational development. In essence measuring a project’s past success in the above listed areas safeguards enterprise direction and development. The review and appraisal of financial, marketing, production, administration and human resources strategy in business operations gives management the obligation to focus on areas of business dysfunction.
The pinnacle of entrepreneurship and effective strategy review is the facet of corrective action implementation, a tenant of entrepreneurship victory that is missing in Zimbabwe businesses and beyond. After critical analysis of the facts and figures from the other four key result areas entrepreneurs have the audacious task to organize all their information for effective decision making. Implementation and the precise execution of either costs cutting measures, business repositioning, and or improvement of employee motivation need to be done meticulously.
The development of entrepreneurs with the right concepts of business leadership and management is what we need, to drive this economy to the next level.
